Workplace Bullying

Welcome to my first post. Will be a short one whilst I get my head around Blogging.

Back in March of 2000 I reported something I didn't like about my workplace. Nine years ago. Since then, I have been to hell and almost back. Sexual harassment, workplace bullying, and corruption. Nine years of my life in constant conflict, but surviving. Equal Opportunities Commission, Ombudsman, Police, Internal Hearings, and now a Parliamentary Inquiry into the department where I used to work. Then there was and still is the toll on my health. Today ? No job, no career, but now helping others in distress. In Posts to come maybe by me sharing my experiences will help you sail through the stormy waters of whistleblowing, harassment, and corrupt people.

the brutality of management in the public service in South Australia is indeed vicious. And still they get away with it. So many people suffer. How efficient is it to destroy people? Easy. Much easier to destroy people and call it 'management' rather than effectively manage. The extremely low standard of integrity and truthfulness in Human Resources has to share some of the blame. They allow people to be appointed to manage who could not manage themselves out of a paper bag. And the Public Relations gurus who make telling lies and art form.
Some integrity and genuine real people need to be appointed as Team managers and Managers before the SA public service can ever hope to be a decent employer. If your kids are thinking of joining the public service in SA tell them to join the bikies instead - the latter would never be as devious and vicious as some managers in the SA public service. They set out to ruin people they do not like and lift up inept friends who they do like.

Thanks for following.

All this stuff is kept quiet and the more quiet it is, the more it goes on. Looking forward to hearing your experiences, no doubt it will be something I can identify with.

It has taken toll of my health too, bet it will knock some years off...

I can only hope that 'whatever goes round comes round'

Bullies keep looking for ways to bully that they can do without being found out by management
And most bullies are excellent at telling Lies to managerment.
So I think one of the favored ways for a bully is to spread lies and untrue rumors about the person they are bullying.
It is time the government did something to make it mandatory that bullies be shifted out of managing people. And to better support the people being bullied. But then government would first have to get rid of some heads of departments. and then some managers in those departments. And then Foley and Conlon and Atkinson. And then there are the politicians handlers who act as Dobermans to stop anyone truth. I expect Mike Rann to do something to stop the bullies at all levels. But I do not think Mike Rann and all his heads of deparments and so on, and so on, have the bottle to do it. Just the Rhetoric, and that means zilch.

How do Managers (currently) bully in the SA public services
1. leave you off the list of people who receive an essential email about a meeting
2. so you are working away and suddenly notice how quiet it is *(open plan office, can hear the baked bean addict's flatulence 15 work-stations away). You stand up, look around and find no one is on the floor except the receptionist out the front.
3.So you race back to email. Panic, Did you forget a meeting. No one mentioned a meeting.
You carefully check and find no messages about a meeting. Was it a fire drill, or the real thing... are you about to be incinerated. No that can't be it, the receptionist is still taking calls.
4.You check the absences board. Hmmm. no one has bothered to write up their absence, except one seriously concientious soul. Their comment says 'meeting til noon'. What meeting? Was I supposed to see that clue? Where is the meeting?
5.Perhaps it is just a genuine mistake? They forgot to include you, maybe? Or maybe the meeting has nothing to do with you? Well in that case why did they not say something before they left.
Should I be worried?
Should I ask the receptionist, or just keep working as if I am not bothered. Try the latter.
6.Lunch time arrives and they are not back.
7.Eventually decide I can go to lunch. Floor empty, though someone has come to relieve the receptionist.
8. Walking past a nearby restaurant i glance sideways and see all my colleagues???/ co-team members???? inside. I wave to them. Some look a little uncomfortable.

To cut a long story short. Yes a meeting was called. Later I was told it had nothing to do with me, so they did not mention it to me. And they only decided to celebrate the changes at the end of meeting, and the manager said time was of the essence to get to the restaurant so there was no time to include me, after all I may have gone to lunch. No one dared stand up to the manager.

And only after a protracted week did it finally emerge that they discussed changes to the structure of the whole team, and changes to my own reporting relationship. So OF COURSE i was being too paranoid to think it relevant that I be at the meeting.
They were going to tell me.... (apparently) but I am not sure when.... was I just to find it out by accident.

Maybe once it was don't let your kiddies go on the stage.
But now that needs updating. Do NOT ALLOW your wonderful bright kids any opportunity to join the SA public service. Because there are some seriously nasty vindictive and abusive people in the public service and they get their fun from humiliating people. Go and work anywhere else , but not the SA public service. Because it is rotted to the core with abusive managers who do not understand fairness and ethics in the workplace. You can make far more money and have far more fund and earn seniorority and fulfillment by working in private enterprise. Or by starting your own business. Or for the really cushy job you should become a SA politician, because the latter appear to be answerable to no one. Seeing as Mr Rann cares not at all and yet lemmings still keep voting him in. He presides over the mess. And the BULLYING continues.
